India-Pakistan Border Crisis

The India-Pakistan border crisis has its roots in the partition of British India in 1947, when the subcontinent was divided into the new states of India and Pakistan along religious lines.1 The princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, with a Hindu ruler and a Muslim-majority population, became the central point of tension after its maharaja chose to accede to India while armed tribesmen from Pakistan’s side entered the territory, triggering the first Indo-Pakistani war of 1947-48.2 That conflict ended with a United Nations-brokered ceasefire and the creation of a ceasefire line that split Kashmir between Indian and Pakistani control, laying the foundation for what would later be called the Line of Control.
